The Film Series Group at Christ Church thought of Jon during our last discussion for the year 2020 and the wisdom of his opinions. Jon is greatly missed!

I first met Jon in the early 90s. We had both joined the Capital Rowing Club's visually impaired program. We instantly discovered coincidentally 3 things we had in common--both from Michigan, both spent time in Sierra Leone in college, and, of course, both visually impaired. I think of the 90s as our glory days, rowing on the potomac and Anacostia, and traveling to regattas up and down the East Coast. Jon worked hard to keep the program moving along and wrangling volunteers. And there was his humor, too. Once we lost the bow clip on a shell, so had no place to put our number for a race. Jon's solution was to slap a power bar on to the bow and stick the number in it. Worked great.
I'll never forget a funny exchange between Jon and Jewel--yes, the singer--which can't be repeated here, but it's forever stuck in my memory as typical Jon humor. You can imagine what Jewel's response was when Jon shouted out a request for 'Free Bird'.
In more recent years Jon and I have exchanged a lot of thoughts on our kids and family life. My kids fondly remember Jon playing a game of 'Headbands' with them.
We enjoyed attending Nationals games and I remember a great couple of hours talking with Jon, his dad, and Jon's co-worker waiting for the rain to stop before a game.
I remember a time we met Jon at the Women's March and Jon had a poignant sign directed at a certain President which said 'What's Wrong With Me?' I loved that sign.
I will miss him and our family will miss him.

I will always remember a particular evening when I invited Jon out to our local watering hole in Washington, D.C. — the Tune Inn — for a drink. We sidled up to the Bar, ordered some beers, and out came Jon’s straw. We proceeded to have a great evening discussing everything, as anyone reading this can imagine, from warm Great Lakes’ summer nights in Michigan to Huguette Clark and the legacy of the Corcoran Art Gallery. I will always admire Jon for the breadth and inquisitiveness of his mind, and his desire to make the world better. To Peter and Adam, please know that your parents love you very much.
