  • Becomes Enthralled With Acting

    United Kingdom
It was when Stewart was attending the Crowlees Church of England Junior and Infants School that he first discovered his love of acting. He attributed it to Cecil Dormand, his English teacher, who slapped "a copy of Shakespeare in my hand [and] said, 'Now get up on your feet and perform.'"

  • Offered a Ultimatum - Acting or Journalism?

Stewart dropped out of school at fifteen to participate more heavily in local theater. He soon obtained a job as a reporter and obituary writer for the Mirfield & District Reporter. Coworker John Cooper said of his journalistic work ethic: "He wasn’t the most dedicated journalist," and when his boss offered him an ultimatum - quit acting, or quit journalism, he speedily chose acting.

  • Marries Sheila Falconer

Stewart and Falconer married in 1966, and remained together for 24 years until their eventual divorce in 1990. They had two children together, Daniel and Sophia. He would marry for a second time in 2000, to Wendy Neuss, a producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Neuss and Stewart divorced three years later. In William Shatner's 2011 film The Captains, Stewart stated "I have two major regrets, and they're both to do with the failure of – my failure in – my marriages."

  • Begrudgingly Begins Iconic Role as Jean-Luc Picard

    United States
In 1987, Patrick Stewart began his legendary role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. When Stewart first moved to Los Angeles, he chose to live out of a suitcase, entirely unsure of the show's success. He initially missed his formal stage acting, but as time went on, he grew to appreciate the differences between television and the stage.

Stewart and Picard began to morph into one character. When discussing what the role meant to him, Stewart remarked, "It came to a point where I had no idea where Picard began and I ended. We completely overlapped."

  • Finds New Niche in X-Men Film Series

    United States
After finishing his role in Star Trek in 1994, Stewart had trouble picking up other roles. His long stint as Jean-Luc Picard had left him typecast. He was able to somewhat break out of the Star Trek role when he played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series. He went on to star in several other X-Men films.
