My favorite memory of my mother is...

My mother was a voracious consumer of the news. When I was growing up, we received three newspapers every day at home and she read all of them. She also watched all the evening newscasts. After I decided to become a journalist, she confided in me that journalism would have been the career she would have chosen. But it struck me that as a woman born in 1923, she didn't really have that choice. She was married at 19, and was a widow with three small children when she met and married my father in 1956. (And then I was born in 1957!) Yet, her love of the written word -- and of the news -- inspired me to follow my chosen career path.
