If the word, "unique," means "one-of-a-kind," then anyone who knew Martha would surely agree that she was all that! Her kind, thoughtful, sincerity, her empathetic care for others, her obvious honesty and integrity, her endearing sense of humor, and joyful embrace of living life to the fullest all worked together in a way that made her truly unforgettable. And, you could always count on Martha to tell you the truth...that's what real friends do!
We became fast friends with Martha after Brett joined Metropolitan Market in Seattle in 1999, before Brett and Martha were married. Plans were already in the works for a big wedding and as many kids as Martha could convince Brett to have. It seems Martha wanted five and they compromised at three. When they lived in Seattle, several employee spouses would regularly hit the town for “Girl's Night Out" to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and friendship...always a good time! Martha’s kindness and thoughtfulness always shined whenever we were together.
Our lives all became increasingly busy, especially theirs, as they moved back to Idaho, got married, and started their family. We were thrilled to make the journey to Idaho when they married and later celebrated with them as each of their beautiful children arrived. Martha may not have had the five kids she always talked about, but she was the kind of person who would have been an amazing mother to any number! Whenever they made their way to Seattle, we would try to get together...they spent one memorable Easter Sunday with us when Martha was very pregnant with Isabella. We also spent a few days with them in Idaho just after Martha completed her chemotherapy...we'll always remember how excited she was to have hair again! Brett and Martha were so gracious with their time as we popped in, just when several of Martha’s sisters were in town for a visit. We enjoyed a great time out on the boat with Brett, awesome mini-burgers at their favorite hamburger joint in CDA, and an incredible picnic in their back yard where we got to know Martha's extended family.
As time went by, it became more and more difficult to stay in touch, but whenever we talked or got together it was as if time stood still and we picked up right where we left off. Our hearts are broken...we loved Martha so much, were blessed to have her as our friend, and are thankful to have so many fond memories of time spent with her to enjoy until we see her again!
