Simone & Whiskey

What do you love about your mutt?

Simone survived a intense toothpick swallowing incident which required intestine searching in order to retrieve them. The emergency vet gave me the two toothpicks as a kind of gruesome souvenir, which just so happened to be on my birthday. I framed those toothpicks along with a picture of Simone. Since then we all have survived the heartache of a boyfriend breakup, a swift reconciliation, a solo move from California to Arkansas, being homesick and lonely. We heard our first tornado siren warning and they didn't judge me when I freaked out and packed an emergency backpack (which only had their vet records and a bottle of wine) and stayed close as we watched the news reports fastidiously. We cuddled as storms like we've never heard before raged outside and sweltered in the humidity, spending the majority of our summers at the air conditioned dog friendly beer pub a block from my ancient apartment.. They let me hold them and cry as my father grew increasingly ill, and snuggled with me after my dad passed away and I felt devastated and lost. They've been with me for an engagement, marriage and subsequent move from Arkansas to New Mexico. I, without embarrassment, refer to them as my best friends. They have been with me for every facet of important moments in my life and the quiet times in between. I can only hope to be there for them as much as they have been there for me, it is the purest form of love.
